Granting Success: Amarillo College

Below is a reposted blog from our friends at Amarillo College. When a grant is approved by our governing board, it becomes a partnership with the organization who receives the grant. Organizations do incredible work in the Texas Panhandle, and below is what can happen when it all comes together.

Amarillo College was looking to expand its East Campus programs and looked to the Amarillo Area Foundation to help become a nationally accredited program.

AC’s Automotive Technology program achieves national accreditation

Amarillo College is pleased to announce that its Automotive Technology program has achieved accreditation by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) in the category of Automobile Service Technology.

To receive ASE accreditation, the College had to demonstrate that it meets all the rigorous standards set forth by the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation.

Additionally, AC underwent an on-site evaluation last fall that more than satisfied an independent committee, which closely examined the program’s course syllabi, sequence of instruction, and program training facilities, materials and faculty.

Students who study automotive technology at AC are now entitled to sit for computer-based ASE certification exams that align with industry standards and demonstrate to potential employers the level of expertise they have achieved.

“This is really exciting. Our students deserve this,” Isaac Bernal, AC’s interim program coordinator, said. “ASE accreditation gives our students the opportunity to achieve certifications that show employers how knowledgeable and dedicated to the field they are.

“We hold ourselves to a very high standard, so it makes sense that we would pursue a level of accreditation that similarly benefits our students, our industry partners and, ultimately, our entire automobile-driving community.”

Bernal and Brian Jacob, the longtime program coordinator who will retire this month, spearheaded the accreditation effort, with administrative support from Michael Kitten, dean of technical education, and David Hall, associate dean of technical education.

The entire process took about a year and a half, they said, and the new accreditation runs through 2023.

The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence was established in 1972 as a nonprofit organization to help improve the quality of automotive service and repair through the voluntary testing and certification of automotive technicians and parts specialists.

Today, there are approximately a quarter of a million ASE certified professionals at work in dealerships, independent shops, collision repair shops, auto parts stores, fleets, schools and colleges throughout the country.

Disaster Relief Fund in Texas Panhandle

For a number of years, the Amarillo Area Foundation has maintained the Panhandle Natural Disaster Fund to help residents in the top 26 counties of the Texas Panhandle during times of disaster.  The purpose of this fund is to have a venue in which donations can easily be made to support and bring relief to Texas Panhandle Residents.

Our work in 2017

In 2017, wildfires brought pain and destruction to the Texas Panhandle with loss of life, livestock, and property.  The AAF Panhandle Disaster Relief Fund was used to support the efforts of the Working Ranch Cowboy Association to mitigate the loss to the cowboys and ranchers impacted by the fires.  Generous donors, some from outside the 26 counties of the Texas Panhandle, gave to bring relief.

How the fund works

The Foundation is not legally allowed to make distributions directly to individuals, but will make the distributions to the non-profit organizations on the frontlines of those affected. Our goal is long-term disaster relief as funds allow, because when the disaster is over it’s just the beginning of getting things back to normal.

Whether it is wildfires, tornados, hail or any other natural disaster, the Amarillo Area Foundation stands ready to receive donations to supply the needed assistance.

Amarillo Area Foundation Request for Grant Proposals

March 1, 2018

On behalf of Consolidated Nuclear Security, LLC, responsible for the management and operations of the Pantex Plant, the Amarillo Area Foundation (AAF) announces a Request for Proposals (RFP).  The Advisory Committee for the CNS Pantex Community Investment Fund, a component fund of the Amarillo Area Foundation, will entertain proposals from nonprofit and charitable institutions throughout the twenty-six northernmost counties in the Texas Panhandle (individuals and non-charitable organizations are not eligible). Grant amounts will range from $2,500 to $10,000. The application process will be competitive. Organizations who fit the eligibility requirements and whose work is in line with the priorities are encouraged to apply.  Only one application per organization will be accepted.  General operating support is a low priority.

The priorities for funding are:

  • Basic Needs (Food, Clothing, and Shelter)
  • Children, Youth, and Family
  • Community Development
  • Education
  • Health and Wellness

2017 Grant Recipient

Priority will be given to proposals from organizations located and operating in one of the twelve contiguous counties surrounding the Pantex Plant with preference given to projects that serve multiple priority counties. These counties are Armstrong, Carson, Deaf Smith, Donley, Gray, Hall, Hutchison, Moore, Oldham, Potter, Randall, and Swisher.

Spilling the beans!

What’s this all about?

Earlier this month we hinted at an exciting promotion we are launching with our friends at Palace Coffee Company. We are so happy we can now spill the (coffee) beans! For years, Palace Coffee has been giving back to local nonprofits through their “Cause Latte” program. For each Cause Latte purchased in any of their locations, Palace gives back $1 to the organization chosen for that month. We think that is such a great idea and we asked how we could help. As a result, The Amarillo Area Foundation and Palace Coffee have created a co-branded coffee sleeve with a QR code. When someone scans the QR code, it will take them to a landing page where they can enter their information and email address. For each unique scan, Amarillo Area Foundation will give $5 to that month’s cause organization! This also means that the customer doesn’t necessarily have to purchase a Cause Latte – they can scan the code from any drink purchase! Amarillo Area Foundation will tally the QR scans all month long up to $1,500.

How you can participate

This promotion will start February 1 — just in time to celebrate Palace Coffee’s newest location opening on Amarillo College’s Washington Street campus! The February organization will be The American Heart Association. Keep posted for all upcoming Cause Latte organizations. You will be able to partner with AAF and Palace every month in 2018 by simply getting your caffeine fix and scanning the QR!

We look forward to continuing partnerships with organizations that help to improve quality of life for Texas Panhandle residents. 2018 is off to a great start!

For the Love of Coffee

We are embarking on our 61st year of improving quality of life for Texas Panhandle residents.    As we begin this year, we felt like it might be time to do something new, fun and innovative. We’re always looking for new ways to engage the community around the idea of philanthropy and this spirit has crafted many of our programs over the years.

Sometimes the word “philanthropy” makes it seem like large gifts are the only ones that matter.  If you talk to nonprofit organizations, they will tell you that all donations make the mission possible.  All donations make our community stronger!

For the duration of 2018, we’ve formed an exciting partnership with our friends at Palace Coffee Company.  Beginning in February, your morning coffee can impact your community like never before.  While you’re getting your jolt for the day, you’ll be doing good for the community as well!

While we’re not spilling the beans just yet, we can say that you will not want to miss this!  You’ll be hearing more about it as we get closer to launch.

Sybil Harrington Day, October 13th

Early Life

A native of Amarillo, Sybil Harrington was the granddaughter of Amarillo pioneers Mr. and Mrs. J.E. Hughes and the daughter of the late Frank and Roxy Buckingham.

In 1935, she married Donald D. Harrington, a legend in the booming Texas oil and gas industry.

The Arts

In their travels, the Harringtons enjoyed collecting art. They sought out works by Matisse, Renoir, Chagall, Pissarro, Monet and Cassatt before most collectors recognized their value.

Mrs. Harrington donated a portion of the collection to the Phoenix Museum of Art. Her historic home at 1600 S. Polk now operates as a house museum with a collection of decorative arts and furnishings.

Her devotion to the arts continued with her gifts to the Metropolitan Opera in New York City and the Juilliard School of Music.

She supported all facets of the visual and performing arts with her gifts, including support for the Amarillo Symphony and Lone Star Ballet production of “The Nutcracker” every Christmas and production of the musical drama “Texas” in Palo Duro Canyon.

She funded $1.2 million in scholarships at West Texas A&M University. The school’s board of regents dedicated the Sybil B. Harrington School of Arts and Humanities on the Canyon campus in 1989 to honor her.

The school also bestowed its first honorary doctorate on her in 1994.

Charity

The Harrington name became synonymous with every successful charitable and cultural endeavor throughout the Texas Panhandle. It appears on the regional medical center, numerous medical facilities and several of the headquarters of non-profit agencies in honor of gifts Mrs. Harrington made personally or through the Don and Sybil Harrington Foundation. After her husband’s death in 1974, she became president of the foundation. The foundation continues to make grants to organizations throughout the Panhandle as part of the Amarillo Area Foundation.

The Boy Scouts honored her with the council’s first James E. West award in 1994 to recognize her support.

Legacy

In 1983, Amarillo declared Oct. 13 as Sybil Harrington Day to honor her on her birthday. The Amarillo Globe-News listed contributions from her and the foundation to 89 Amarillo organizations and agencies.

The Harrington Library Consortium links academic and public libraries throughout the Panhandle.

Mrs. Harrington’s gifts of almost $17.5 million made the Don and Sybil Harrington Cancer Center possible. The medical center became the Harrington Regional Medical Center in 1990 to recognize her personal contributions and grants.

To support higher education, she established the Sybil B. Harrington Scholarship Fund of the Amarillo College Foundation.

The University of Texas received a gift of oil and gas properties from the Harrington Foundation worth $4.35 million, plus a gift of $1.5 million in 1992.

Mrs. Harrington died Sept. 17, 1998.

The Bright Side of the Texas Panhandle

Bad news is an abundant commodity these days. You can find it everywhere you turn. From social media, to print news, to television, to the radio, there is no shortage of sad, depressing news. So much so, we often fail to see what is occurring before our eyes. It’s easy to lose our way in the shadows of negativity. But without some brilliant light, there would be no shadows. There is always a positive light shining somewhere if we only take time to look.

We have a solution

At the Amarillo Area Foundation, we are fortunate to get a daily glimpse at the multitude of ways people across the Panhandle shine through filling needs in their communities. Every day we see people volunteering, giving of their time and financial resources. Sadly, these types of stories don’t make the news often. That is why the Amarillo Area Foundation has created The Bright Side. Each Tuesday at 6:00 PM on News Channel 10, The Bright Side will spotlight one of our fund holders in a one-minute media package courtesy of the Amarillo Area Foundation. The purpose of this endeavor is to focus on the positive news in the Texas Panhandle while helping organizations and projects gain exposure to potential donors, volunteers, and those desiring their services. By providing this service for our fund holders, we hope the positive light they are shining will be amplified for more people to see. We hope people become inspired to both be and see a shining light in their corner of the Panhandle. And, we hope even more needs are filled from the arts, to education, to human services, to healthcare.

A Year of Positive News

For the next year, plan to see the good works of 52 different fund holders at the Amarillo Area Foundation. May it open your eyes to the generous, positive people surrounding you in the Panhandle. May it open your mind to identifying needs in your community. May it open your heart to fulfilling those needs becoming part of the bright side of the Texas Panhandle.

Alone We Can Do Little, Together We Can Do Much!

It is no secret that when women choose to work together, great feats can be accomplished. The Women’s Philanthropy Fund is a shining example of this. In 2008, the Amarillo Area Foundation and a group of highly motivated women established the Women’s Philanthropy Fund to demonstrate that by combining their contributions, they could provide solutions to ongoing challenges. Since 2009, 168 women have provided contributions totaling more than $475,000 and have granted $290,000 to 31 nonprofit organizations for the benefit of women, children, and families.

“The Women’s Philanthropy Fund is unique in its use of pooled funds to empower organizations to make new programs possible and take existing programs to the next level. Grants from the fund make real and lasting differences in the lives of women and children the Texas Panhandle,” states Carolina Walden, Women’s Philanthropy Fund Advisory Board member. And there are no signs of slowing down. Women’s Philanthropy Fund members hold a firm belief that women and children play a vital role in our community and empowering them is crucial to the wellbeing of the entire population of the Texas Panhandle. When one woman succeeds or one child prospers, everyone benefits.

Grant recipients are not the only people who benefit from the Women’s Philanthropy Fund. Each year, members of the Women’s Philanthropy Fund have the opportunity to come together and make the decision of which organizations will receive grants from the money these individual women have pooled together. Through this process, friendships are forged, experience is gained, and education about the needs in our area as well as the organizations that provide help is obtained. Lizzie Mason, Women’s Philanthropy Fund Advisory Board member, says it best, “The Women’s Philanthropy membership is made up of a dynamic group of women who want to do good in the Texas Panhandle. I love being a part of this group because we learn about so many different needs involving women and children in our community, and we actually help them!”

If you would like to make a difference and improve quality of life for women and children, we invite you to join us as a member in 2017 as we expand our voice throughout the Texas Panhandle. Women 39 and under can join with a Silver Membership for $500 annually. The Gold Membership is $1000 annually, and arrangements can be made for any membership to be paid out monthly. The Amarillo Area Foundation and The Don and Sybil Harrington Foundation 2017 Request for Proposals

The Amarillo Area Foundation is now accepting applications for the Discretionary Grant (DG) and Catalyst Grant (CG) program. The application process is competitive and nonprofit organizations located within the top twenty-six counties of the Texas Panhandle are encouraged to apply.  Visit www.amarilloareafoundation.org/grants and click on “Foundation Grant Programs” for full information regarding both programs.

The DG program accepts grant requests of over $20,000 and the CG Program accepts grant requests between $2,500 to $20,000.  In addition to other eligibility criteria, an organization may only submit a grant application to the Amarillo Area Foundation once per twelve-month period and must choose to submit either a CG or a DG application.
