2018 Harrington Regional Medical Campus Grant Cycle

The mission of the AAF Community Health Foundation, otherwise known as the Harrington Regional Medical Campus (HRMC), is to promote quality of life in the Texas Panhandle through exceptional healthcare, education, and research. Applications are now being accepted for the 2018 HRMC Resident Grant Program and the HRMC Community Health Grant Program.  The goal of the grant programs is to improve the quality and accessibility of healthcare ultimately leading to an improved quality of life for residents of the top 26 counties of the Texas Panhandle.

Both grant programs are competitive and proposals will be accepted from eligible organizations.  Eligible organizations are those that hold a current tax-exempt status under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and include a nonprofit organization, recognized government entity: state, county, or city agency, that are requesting funds exclusively for public purposes; a K-12 public school, community/junior college, state college or university; or a faith-based organization with a proposed project that benefits the community at large.

HRMC Resident Grant Program: The HRMC Board will accept grant applications from Medical Center campus resident organizations for projects and capital improvements.  Preference will be given to Ronald McDonald House, Turn Center, Amarillo Botanical Gardens, Don Harrington Discovery Center, and Coffee Memorial Blood Center.   $21,000 is available and proposals for up to $20,000 will be accepted. High priority will be given to specific project-related proposals.  Operational support is a low priority.

HRMC Community Health Grant Program: The HRMC Board will accept grant proposals for healthcare related projects from eligible organizations located throughout the 26-county region.  $42,000 is available and proposals for up to $20,000 will be accepted.  High priority will be given to specific project-related proposals as well as challenge and/or matching grants.  Proposals will be accepted for capital projects, capacity building, innovative projects, and research projects.  Operational support is a low priority.

Organizations may only submit one grant application per year; however, Medical Center campus residents may submit a grant application to both the HRMC Resident Grant Program and the HRMC Community Health Grant Program in the same year.

2018 Proposal Submission Deadlines

The Amarillo Area Foundation will accept applications for both the HRMC Resident Grant program and the HRMC Community Health Grant Program until noon on Friday, August 31, 2018.  Applications for both grant programs must be submitted through the Foundation’s online portal which can be accessed on the Internet at aaf.spectrumportal.net. Selection Process

Both grant programs are competitive.  Applications will be reviewed by AAF staff for eligibility and completeness.  The HRMC Board of Directors will review the applications in October and make funding decisions.  Organizations will be notified of funding decisions in late October.

Amarillo Area Foundation Welcomes New Vice President of Community Investment

The Amarillo Area Foundation is proud to welcome Emily Wood as Vice President of Community Investment. Wood will be responsible for the Foundation’s grants and scholarship programs, the Nonprofit Service Center, No Limits No Excuses, ACE, as well as new community investment program

She joins AAF from the Amarillo Children’s Home where she served as the Director of Development. During her tenure, she facilitated capital campaign planning, created and managed an annual development plan, and assisted in the recent rebranding of the organization (previously Presbyterian Home for Children).

Woods comes to the Foundation with over 16 years of experience in the nonprofit sector. For many years she worked as a consultant with organizations to help them achieve their goals through strategic planning, database management training, grant writing, executive search, and fund-raising assistance. She has served on the staff of Opportunity School, The Amarillo Symphony, and The Bowery Mission (NYC).

Woods holds a BA in English with a minor in Journalism from Baylor University. She is a member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals and has volunteered with many local organizations such as Coronado Elementary School, the Junior League of Amarillo, and Heal the City.

ACE Scholarship Program to Wind Down 

The current Achievement through Commitment to Education (ACE) scholarship program will wind down over the coming years as the Amarillo Area Foundation begins work with community partners to create a sustainable new program to help students gain an education beyond high school.  The Amarillo Area Foundation has operated the ACE program for more than 24 years. 

“The success of the ACE program will be felt in the Panhandle region for decades,” said Clay Stribling, President and CEO of the Amarillo Area Foundation. “We are proud of the success of the program and the scholars who were inspired to greater achievement through ACE.” 

The ACE program will continue supporting students who have signed an ACE pledge, including students who were classified as freshmen through seniors in high school during the last academic year and those pursuing higher education now. However, no new high school students will be enrolled in the program. 

“ACE will pay scholarships as long as funding remains, and the Amarillo Area Foundation is dedicated to the task of finding community partners to meet the commitment to existing scholars in the program,” Stribling said. 

ACE began in 1994 at Palo Duro High School and later expanded to Caprock High School and to qualifying students at Tascosa High School.  The program provided participants with college tuition, books, and fees if they met certain criteria. Since its inception, ACE scholars have earned 2,319 certificates and degrees, including 14 doctoral degrees. Approximately $8.3 million in ACE scholarships have benefited students over the life of the program.  

“Funding for higher education is a need for many families in our region, and we recognize it is critical to our future,” Stribling said. “As we continue our work with community partners on a scholarship program to address the needs of all AISD students, I encourage parents and others with questions, concerns, or ideas to contact the foundation.” 

Panhandle Disaster Relief Fund to help the top 26 counties as the drought conditions continue

Amarillo, TX – The Panhandle Disaster Relief Fund, established to help those affected by natural disasters in the Texas Panhandle, is seeking donations as a devastating drought continues to worsen in the area.  As disasters happen across the area, the Amarillo Area Foundation works with local and regional organizations to help offset the burdens left in the wake of the incidents.

In 2017, the fund helped cattle ranchers who were devastated by the March fires that spread across the Panhandle and High Plains. Those fires devastated hundreds of thousands of acres of ranch land and thousands of miles of fence, killed and maimed livestock and, worst of all, caused the loss of four lives. After the fires were contained, help was needed as quickly as possible.

100% of donations will be sent directly to those impacted by disasters and can be made on Amarillo Area Foundation’s website (amarilloareafoundation.org).  Donations are needed immediately as the region heads into the spring season and the extended forecast doesn’t include rain. It’s a critical time to receive donations in order to be able to meet any needs effectively should a disaster arise.

Amarillo Area Foundation Request for Grant Proposals

On behalf of Consolidated Nuclear Security, LLC, responsible for the management and operations of the Pantex Plant, the Amarillo Area Foundation (AAF) announces a Request for Proposals (RFP).  The Advisory Committee for the CNS Pantex Community Investment Fund, a component fund of the Amarillo Area Foundation, will entertain proposals from nonprofit and charitable institutions throughout the twenty-six northernmost counties in the Texas Panhandle (individuals and non-charitable organizations are not eligible). Grant amounts will range from $2,500 to $10,000. The application process will be competitive. Organizations who fit the eligibility requirements and whose work is in line with the priorities are encouraged to apply.  Only one application per organization will be accepted.  General operating support is a low priority.

The priorities for funding are:

  • Basic Needs (Food, Clothing, and Shelter)
  • Children, Youth, and Family
  • Community Development
  • Education
  • Health and Wellness

2017 Grant Recipient

Priority will be given to proposals from organizations located and operating in one of the twelve contiguous counties surrounding the Pantex Plant with preference given to projects that serve multiple priority counties. These counties are Armstrong, Carson, Deaf Smith, Donley, Gray, Hall, Hutchison, Moore, Oldham, Potter, Randall, and Swisher.

Amarillo Area Foundation/ The Don and Sybil Harrington Foundation 2018 REQUEST FOR APPLICATIONS

Each year, the Amarillo Area Foundation (AAF) and its supporting organization, The Don and Sybil Harrington Foundation (HF), consider grant requests from public charities located within the northernmost 26 counties of Texas.  The application process is competitive and nonprofit organizations located within the Texas Panhandle are encouraged to apply. (Individuals and noncharitable agencies are not eligible to apply for funding.) Grant applications are considered by the Amarillo Area Foundation and its supporting organization, The Don and Sybil Harrington Foundation, via a single application. The Harrington Foundation does not receive grant requests directly from nonprofit organizations.  Visit www.amarilloareafoundation.org/grants and click on “Foundation Grant Programs” for history, guidelines, eligibility, exclusions, priorities, focus areas, and additional information.

The Amarillo Area Foundation will accept proposals for the Discretionary Grant (DG) program and the Catalyst Grant (CG) Program.  The DG program accepts grant requests of over $20,000 and the CG Program accepts grant requests between $2,500 to $20,000An organization may only submit a grant application to the Amarillo Area Foundation once per twelve-month period and must choose to submit either a CG application or a DG application.  In addition, any reporting requirements of a previous DG or CG must be fulfilled before an organization is eligible to apply. The deadlines for both programs is at 12:00 noon on the dates below.

In 2018, the Discretionary/Catalyst grant cycles will be as follows:

 *There will be an October 26th application deadline for the Catalyst Grant program;

however, the third Discretionary Grant cycle will only be held if funds are available.

DG applications will be reviewed by AAF staff and presented to the Board of Directors for consideration.  A committee comprised of community members aged 45 and younger from across the Texas Panhandle will review applications for the CG Program and then make funding recommendations to the AAF Board.

Upon submission, applications and accompanying materials become the property of the Foundation and are used as deemed appropriate.  These materials may be reviewed with others as part of the assessment process.  Information may also be shared with other foundations and funding sources that call for information about community projects.

The Amarillo Area Foundation Awards over $475,000 in Scholarships

AMARILLO – The Amarillo Area Foundation has awarded 312 scholarships totaling $479,400 to Panhandle area students for the 2017-2018 school year.

Of the 312 scholarship awarded, 180 are for new scholarship recipients and 132 are for recipients that are continuing to receive previously awarded scholarships.  The Foundation received 3,136 applications from high school students and 108 applications from college students.  The scholarship recipients represent 23 Panhandle counties and will attend 32 different universities.

The Foundation administers 101 scholarship funds in addition to the Achievement through Commitment to Education (ACE) Scholarship program.  The Foundation’s Scholarship Selection Committee recommends recipients for 58 of the 101 non-ACE funds and local selection committees outside the Foundation recommend recipients for the remaining funds.  The Foundation manages many unique scholarships that are not only for graduating high school seniors but are also for individuals who are already college students.

”Now that the application is online, more students from the Panhandle area are accessing and applying for scholarships that are managed by the Foundation. We are proud to be investing in the future of many young Panhandle residents, both local and rural,” said Amarillo Area Foundation Vice President of Community Investment, Katharyn Wiegand.

Meet Trent

Trent Hill recently joined the Amarillo Area Foundation as Vice President of Development.  Born and raised in Amarillo, Trent graduated from Amarillo High School and attended West Texas State University where he earned a B.B.A. in 1982 and Master of Science in 1986.  He joined First National Bank of Canyon as Director of Marketing and Personnel in 1982.  In 1985 he became the Director of Economic Development for the Amarillo Chamber of Commerce, until opening the Amarillo and Lubbock markets for Southwestern Bell Mobile Systems (now AT&T cellular) in 1987.  In 1989 Trent moved to Denton, Texas to attend the University of North Texas to pursue a Ph.D.  which he earned in 1993.

Trent then joined Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas as Director of Development. He moved to Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi in 1997 where he served as Vice President of Institutional Advancement until his retirement in January 2017.

“Having the opportunity to return to the Texas Panhandle is a true blessing.  I love Texas, I loved North Texas, I loved East Texas and I loved South Texas, but nothing, absolutely nothing, compares to my love for the Texas Panhandle and its people.  To be able to join the dynamic team at the Amarillo Area Foundation in working to improve the quality of life for the Texas Panhandle residents is a dream come true.” said Hill.

As Vice President of Development for the Foundation, Trent engages in the creation and expansion of funds to support quality of life for residents of the Texas Panhandle.  It is his hope to engage the 26 counties of the Texas Panhandle in the drive to support community needs.  From expansion of the membership to increasing the number and size of funds at the Foundation, Trent’s efforts will help promote the Foundation’s mission.

Trent and his wife Carole have three children;  Naudia Vasquez, Nikalous Roark, John Wayne Hill and his wife Megan Hill; as well as two grandsons, Ryan Hill (4) and Jace Hill (3).

In 2008, the Amarillo Area Foundation and a group of highly motivated women established the Women’s Philanthropy Fund (WPF) to address the needs of women and children in the Texas Panhandle.  The donors are philanthropically motivated women who recognized that pooling contributions could help them unite to address the issues facing the women and children in our region in all areas of life. The WPF will focus on programs or projects assessed to have the highest possibility of a direct impact on the well-being of women and children in the Texas Panhandle.  The purpose of the fund is to:

  • Unite, serve, and empower women to become leaders in philanthropy
  • Enable contributors to have more direction and involvement in where their dollars are spent
  • Achieve greater impact by drawing on the collective wisdom of donors
  • Demonstrate the effect of how pooled donations can yield large scale, targeted grants
  • Enable innovative and compelling programs and projects that might otherwise not be possible
  • Research areas of need and strategically allocate funds to achieve the greatest impact
  • Address education, awareness, and participation in philanthropy

One of the main purposes of the Amarillo Area Foundation Women’s Philanthropy Fund is to connect, empower, and enrich women’s lives across the Panhandle. The fund awards annual grants through a competitive process to charitable organizations throughout the Texas Panhandle who serve women and/or children.
